Direct Thermal (Thermal Direct) is a printing method that reproduces texts or images directly on the material. It uses heat-sensitive paper that blackens as it passes the thermal printhead

Direct thermal printing uses chemically treated, heat-sensitive material (e.g., a label or Eftpos receipt) that blackens when it passes through the printer.

To print direct thermal labels, you do not need a thermal ribbon (ink/toner). However, direct thermal labels are not suited if they will be exposed to heat, sunlight, or friction, as the print will deteriorate (fade). So, they tend to be used when the labels are not needed for very long such as shipping, logistics & courier labels. They work well as chiller or freezer labels, so long as the correct adhesive is being used (standard adhesive labels can peel and come off if frozen or refrigerated).

Many thermal printers can print both direct thermal and thermal transfer methods. However, some printers can only print using direct thermal method and not thermal transfer.
